EXD'11/LISBOA — Lisbon Lectures and OpenTalks bring contemporary cultural thought to Lisbon
During the EXD'11/LISBOA Opening Week, luminaries of creative thinking and practice gather in the Portuguese capital during five intensive days, for the thought-provoking Lisbon Lectures and the incisive Open Talks debates.
Lisbon Lectures — Cinema São Jorge
An audience favorite, the Lisbon Lectures kick off the Opening Week’s whirlwind of events. During four afternoons, until October 1, the Cinema São Jorge hosts 7 established professionals and influential theorists of different generations and backgrounds, who will enrich the ongoing reflection with their unique insights.
WED 28 SEP 16:00 D. Manuel Clemente
With free admission, the first lecture (28 Sep) will be delivered by the historian, philosopher and theologian Manuel Clemente (PT), a champion of intercultural dialogue who will introduce the theme "Useless";

The second day (29 Sep) features Heather Shaw (US), director of studio Vita Motus, working in technology-driven vehicle and ambient design, followed by Dutch design leading man Marcel Wanders (NL), product and interior designer to the stars, co-founder and art director of Moooi.

Day three (30 Sep) introduces the innovative and experimental work of graphic design duo Sulki & Min (KR), followed by product designer Fernando Brízio (PT), a seminal figure of Portuguese design who will delve into his design process.

SAT 01 OCT 15:00 Michael Rock 16:00 Marcelo Rosenbaum
On 1 October 2x4 founder and mentor Michael Rock (US) takes to the stage to share the work of his award-winning graphic design studio. Next is Brazilian design superstar Marcelo Rosenbaum (BR), whose work ranges from luxury showrooms to social design projects in his native country.

Open Talks— Lounging Space
The Opening Week mornings offer exciting debates on emerging issues in current creative practice with the Open Talks (free admission).
An eclectic mix of thinkers, critics, curators and creators are picked by the Talk Host to discuss a given theme. The audience is encouraged to contribute their own thoughts, reflections and provocations on different topics:

INFORMATION EXCHANGE will focus on how digital information penetrates and transforms the built environment. Zoë Ryan (GB), design curator of the Art Institute of Chicago, leads this panel composed by interactive designer Aaron Cope (US), the multimedia-turned-book designer Joost Grootens (NL), and conceptual design duo Mischler'Traxler (AT).

USE-LESS ARCHITECTURE? is the theme proposed by architect and curator Peter Gadanho (PT), who moderates the discussion between architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange (US), Gretchen Mokry (U.S.) Design Director of Architecture for Humanity, and architect/artist Folke Köbberling (DE) of Köbberling/Kaltwasser.

SAT 01 OCT 11:00 – 13:00
DO-IT-YOURSELF DESIGN is hosted by co-director of the Serpentine Galley and foremost curator Hans Ulrich Obrist (CH). Guest participants include Italian design legend Enzo Mari (IT), author of the pioneering 1974 project Autoprogettazioni, and Thomas Lommée (BE), designer of the Open Structures website. Two designer generations discuss the emerging trend of open design and DIY which, between utopia and pragmaticism, have stepped into the limelight.

DESIGN EX-MUROS Addressing the current design focus on social values and (bio)technological innovation coupled with a historical perspective, this debate is hosted by design commentator, curator and professor Hans Maier Aichen (DE) and designer Ed Annink (NL) and features the stellar cast of cutting-edge practitioners Marti Guixé (ES), Zeger Reyers (NL), Karen Ryan (GB) and Hilde Teerlink (BE).
